Tirant son nom du fameux sound system Jamaicain, le crew Passa Passa de Cartagena gère la scène dancehall en espagnol en Colombie (en autant que l’on puisse le juger du Canada). Dj Dever est spécialement l’un de mes producteurs préférés avec juste ce qu’il faut de mesure entre le rawness efficace et la sensibilité pop. Lil Silvio est aussi l’un des chanteurs que l’on apprécie particulièrement à Masala, avec son timbre de voix particuliers qui le fait étrangement sonner comme Lady Saw. Bref, Passa Passa à récemment rassemblé TOUTES leurs prods de ces dernières années en une série de compilation et les ont posté sur le blog FLOW CARTAGENA. Le Shoke c’est la danse cool en Colombie cette année! Nous en avons parlé il y a quelques temps ici, voici maintenant une production un peu plus propre pour ne pas dire pop avec un gros son méchant incluant un mélange de merengue en extra.

Big in Colombia: Jiggy Drama

Il y a un an, nous avons fait un petit tour du dancehall hecho en Colombia ici. Un des chanteurs les plus importants de la scène est certainement Jiggy D qui fait parti de S.A Finest (De l’ile de San Andres) avec le fameux Contra la pared que je vous invite à réécouter ici. Il revient sous le nom de Jiggy Drama pour un projet solo Dancehall aux sonorités chaudes et avec un rythme relativement lent produit par Dj Sheky. Voici donc son dernier single + contra la pared 2010. À voir le compteur de la vidéo sur youtube avec plus de 4 millions de visiteurs, il est clair que c’est un succès!

Danse el Choque

La nouvelle fureur du moment sur la côte atlantique de la Colombie est de danser le Choque.   Un mélange de perreo, footwork, de reggaeton/dancehall/dembow et le tout, à saveur de champeta.  Le phénomène est assez important pour qu’une démonstration s’impose pendant une émission populaire de l’après midi!

Jerking on Maquina Latina y Champeta

Back from Colombia since a couple of weeks now, I’m still listening to hundred of CDR of every kinds of music. For me, Colombia is like music land. In this country, on every corner you get surprised about what you hear. How many times I’ve walked in a bar, a shop, a car, heard a ringtone, getting a taxi and asking to the guy what I was hearing and taking notes of it! Anyhow, I will go deeper in a future post regarding it and provide a special mix of what I like the most from these cds.

We already talked before about crazy music like tribal warachera in Mexico and today I want to show some stuff from Venezuela and Colombia.

Since a long time I want to talk about Machina Latina (Raptor house or changa tukky). La machine latina is an electro dance music that start in Venezuela. The sound of it is quite aggressive and people dance some kind of tecktonik on it. Like warachera, it’s made most of the time by people at home with some crazy loops! On the net, you can find a bunch of videos showing the latest dance move made out of school or in the street.

Here’s one of the best example I’ve heard of this genre.

Champeta is a old genre of street music and it’s a little bit stuck in the pass with the same drums and loop. But I think something new will emerge soon from the colombian coast since we already talked about dancehall and champeta put together here on the blog. Anyway, there’s other experimentation, while listening to some champeta on youtube, I’ve found this interesting blend of Champeta and Machina Latina. Also the dance look great since champeta is somehow a blend of hiplife and soukous.

Talking about dance, it’s funny to see some similarities with Jerk dance on the west coast. Here’s a good example!
