Pow Wow Step meets Nothern Cree

No I’m not going to put a picture of a Native girl to get some sexyness action going on this blog. Instead I’ll let you enjoy the great work A Tribe Called Red did on Northern Cree’s beautiful song “Red Skin Girl” (see video below). Explore Youtube for more of Nothern Cree’s music, it’s powerful and yet very fragile.
Red Skin Girl (ATCR Remix) by A Tribe Called Red

Why did nobody talked to me about these guys before ??? A Tribe Call Red illustrates one more time the vitality of the Canadian scene with these sick videos and the sound of the native Pow Wows smartly blended in some banging dance music be it Dubstep or House. It could be very gimmicky on paper, but they really manage to bring the idea to another level with these tracks, like if Joker would have fall in love with the Drum Circles. ATCR are from Ottawa, Canada’s political capital and I don’t have much information on them yet but knowing that they are DJ collective who have been active on the club scene since 2008. I really hope to hear more of them in 2011!

Stumble on Bonjay

So we’ve been Bonjay‘s supporters for years at Masala and I must openly admit that I’m now working with them to help them go from a Canadian sensation to an international one. And they deserve it, as they’re creating their very own unique futuristic and soulful version of Dancehall, rooted in the experience of many second generation immigrants who manage to reflect their complex identity into a complex blended music. What happened in Dancehall in the UK in the 80s and 90s with the kids of the Jamaican migration of the 50s and 60s is happening now in Canada (especially in Toronto) with the kids of migrants from the 70s and the 80s.They have many stories to tell and I’m sure I’ll share some of them here in the future, but for now I can only urge you to check out their first music videos, buy their first mini-album Broughtupsy (only available in North America, spread the word to your European label friends) or go see them live.
