  • Tigerstyle released Mystics, Martyrs and Maharajas

    Posted on November 18th, 2008 2 comments

Tigerstyle‘s long waited full lenght dropped earlier this month. It’s available on digital download on their webstire : www.nachural.co.uk. 17 tracks, pretty much all new material except a couple songs. You may have already heard Sinden’s Balle!Shava! remix on the Masala radio show or elsewhere before, but there is way more than 130bpm electro here. It’s a pretty diverse range of beats and production instead. Vybz Kartel is definitly a plus for one of the best track of the album. You’ll find a track with a spanish mc and a bhangra beat structered as a reggaeton beat. There’s a lot of r’n'b/garage female singing on the album that I dislike but I guess that’s what’s up when you live in the UK and want to do music for clubs. But there’s also some serious dancefloor oriented music. Instead of Sinden’s remix, I would rather go with that track which should definitly get people’s reactions with it’s heavy bassy kick drum and happy arrangements.

    Download Tigerstyle – Bol!Bol!Bol! (192k)

Also download Tigerstyle’s remix of Labh Janjua’s Billo Tere Nakreh thanks to Palms Out Sounds. Really good remix! And for those of you who want more cutting edge indian urban music, I would suggest to check out the friction radio show on BBC; always some good stuff. Oh and did I mention bhangra bassline? More bhangra coming up, stay tune.

This sunday will see the third edition of Garam Garam (hot hot), a night dedicated to Indian music where you can work your ligthball dance moves or hang out on the comfy sofas of Blizzarts. Jay Watts III is starting the night playing some classic bollywood tracks from the 50′s to the 80′s and around 11, I’m playing a mix of “heavy on the Dhol” Bhangra and some contemporary Bollywood bangers. Bollywood visuals will be running in the background. It’s free and hosted by Murad.

  • Jassi Sidhu: The Justin Timberlake of Bhangra

Posted on April 12th, 2008 No comments

Jassi Sidhu used to be the lead singer of Desi boys band but he quited in 2002 to pursue a solo career. Every time he release an album, he usually trust the top of the charts for several weeks. Just like Justin Timberlake, girls falls for his smile, and guys appreciate the good pop hooks and the great production of his tracks (no this isn’t basic sexist reduction :) ). His latest opus, The New Adventures of Jassi Siddhu, dropped last month and since then the track Ki Kehneh, with Bhangra legend Malkit Singh, is on top of the BBC Asian Network chart.

But my favorite song of the album is definitely Koka, which double the tempo several times during the song. It’s such a great party pop song, you can’t help but throw your hands in the air and do the light ball dance!

She’s one of the most important figures of the scene in North America as well as an example for many woman with South-Asian roots, or more generally for immigrant women. Last October, she released an album called Basement Bhangra, a milestone in her career celebrating the 10h anniversary of the night. Most of the biggest names in Bhangra participated in the album as well as Wyclef Jean, who is always connected to the new urban sounds of the world.

  • Ishq Bector – Looping in the Wealth

    Posted on January 23rd, 2008 3 comments

What I like about that guy (apart this 2 good songs) is that he represents what is, in my opinion, the future of music in the years to come: a great mix, a perfect blending, of different local sounds into one production that could be appealling to both sides. Lyrics aren’t super interesting, but we’re talking about pop music here, not crunk or leftfield. On the other hand, I very much like the beats on this 2 songs. The other point that makes him a great symbol is that Ishq was actually born in Winnipeg, Canada and found success in India. He’s representing how music and immigration are building bridges between culture in a very concrete and creative way. The fact that I write about him in Montreal, not because I heard of him through Canadians network (media, word of mouth, etc.), but just because I found his stuff randomly, is also a great addition to the loop.

Ishq Bector ft Shakti Kapoor, Hrishitaa Bhatt & Pratichee – Dakku Daddy
