As I said in my last post, I really like to let the music reach me in it’s own time. I’ve been getting tips on Burna Boy over the last year or two but haven’t actually sat down to investigate. I’ve been listening to a lot of Murlo’s work ever since my homie Max sent in the goods and trolling through Murlo’s Soundcloud page…once again Burna Boy in my line of sight. So what’s this all about? Who is Burna Boy?

Powered by Aristokrat Records, Nigeria’s Burna Boy as his website says “is a man on a mission.” You can feel the Aristokrat hustle though, pushing Burna Boy in every direction. Again another sensation on the rise it’s good to know he’s got another release coming out soon. Stay tuned for more while I track these guys down.  The Tonight track is a follow up from the lead single Like To Smash, the Murlo refix adds a nice funky touch and Murlo has done a good job so throw these guys much love and affection: listen, download, enjoy.

I really don’t believe in standing and watching DJ’s while they play. So the Boiler Room site is always difficult for me to visit. The Internet went crazy when the Buraka Som Sistema crew hopped on the decks in Lisbon some time last month at The Boiler Room. Super super super cool but sometimes it’s not good to jump on things immediately. I like for the sound to meet me in my own time.

Today in my part of the world there is a snow storm out and I just felt the need to heat things up inside. Right from the intro I can understand where the hype is coming from. Not that Buraka Som Sistema don’t deserve the love but you can truly feel it and that’s what is most important. Sometimes when things are the rage on the Internet the feeling gets diminished.

Things have been a little slow around the Masala headquarters so far this year. 2012 was a big one and in the proper fashion 2013 continues to bring new opportunities and we continue to rise and take advantage of the goodness. We’ve still got love for the artists doing their thing for the sake of the influence of the sweet sweet vibes of the motherland. There is a lot coming from the ambassadors of the “Afro Electronic” sound, in fact anything with the Afro influence this year is sure to be pure fire. For me, some artists have been popping up left right and center and my first example is the latest video release from Seayou Records who represent Belgian/Ghanaian songstress Anbuley.

Her latest video for “M33ba” has basically jolted me back into action cos to discover this when it’s too late would be a sad sad situation. Anbuley delivers her idiosyncratic flavour to  the sound of afro electro dance music and this is where the warm feelings begin to arise. Her deep gutteral vocals are enough to send chills down your back, her style…on point and her moves right on track. I’m always for girls and women doing their thing because as we all know female success is always a battle when you are in a male dominated profession. Anbuley shows signs of being a true power player who will go on to make make power moves and that’s what 2013 will be about…Power moving and power shaking!

Masala et The Music Gallery se sont associés pour programmer une soirée spéciale lors du X-Avant Festival. Valeo de Masala sera rejoint par Chief Boima de Dutty Artz (moitié de Banana Clipz) et Daniel Vila de Double Double Land pour une soirée spéciale dédié à l’avant garde de la World 2.0. C’est une véritable reconaissance du mouvement par une vénérable institution de la musique contemporaine à Toronto.

Masala’s own DJ Valeo will be joining Dutty Artz member and globetrotting DJ/Producer Chief Boima in Toronto this Friday night for opening of the Music Gallery’s X-Avant Festival!

Chief Boima is a Sierra Leonean-American musician, DJ, cultural activist, and writer currently based in New York who over the years has grown to be an internationally respected figure in “dance music” styles from around the world, especially from the African diaspora. From laptops to junk shop gear to electro-acoustics, this year’s X Avant New Music Festival VII: Expanding Circuits champions electronic music, by taking abstraction, compelling rhythms and adventurous sonics to new heights.

Photo Romance a sorti la semaine passée son EP “Mexican Pointy Boots” sur l’excellent netlabel “Cocobass Records”. Le parisien, également connu sous le nom de Marvy Da Pimp, nous propose son interprétation bien à lui du mouvement 3ball, combinant rythmes mexicains et basses des ghettos nord américains.

Je vous conseille de jeter une oreille chez Cocobass, ce label Vénézuélien fait partie de ceux qui font vraiment avancer la musique électronique alternative sud-américaine vers le futur, en plus toutes leurs sorties sont gratuites! http://cocobass.net/
