A Tribe Called Red vient de poster une nouvelle vidéo toujours aussi inventive et intéressante à la fois sur le plan de l’image et du son. Intitulée NDN’s in all directions, La chanson est un remix dancehall-Moombahton du classique Scalp Them par Super Cat alors que la vidéo reprend à la fois des images de PowWow des plaines et des images de danseurs anglais des années 60s. Parles-moi de profondeurs de couches symboliques…

The rest of the video is people singing, talking or dancing to something that is about natives when they aren’t Aboriginal at all.“

A Tribe Called Red révolutionne la musique autochtone

At the beginning of the year, thanks to Paul Devro and Diplo from Mad Decent, the band A Tribe Called Red popped up on our radar as well as on many other people, blowing everybody’s mind with their PowWow Step sound. A few weeks later, at the beginning of march, ATCR posted their remix of Northern Cree‘s song Red Skin Girl. Based in Calgary, Northern Cree are arguably one of the most renowned Pow Wow group as they received several Grammys and Junos. That track received much feedback from both the community and music lovers, but it wasn’t available until today. After several months of negotiations with Northern Cree’s label, we’re very happy to release A Tribe Called Red’s first official track! You can listen and download it below:

Au début de l’année, grâce à Paul Devro et Diplo de Mad Decent, le groupe A Tribe Called Red est apparu sur le radar de pas mal de monde, nous y compris avec leur son unique le PowWow Step. Quelques semaines plus tard au mois de Mars, ATCR ont posté leur remix de la chanson Red Skin Girl par le groupe Northern Cree, probablement le plus reconnus (Grammys, Junos) des groupes de chanteurs Pow Wow, basés à Calgary en Alberta. Cette chanson a reçu énormément de feedback tant par les gens de la communauté que les amateurs de musique en général, mais elle n’était pas disponible jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Après plusieurs mois de discussions avec le label de Northern Cree, Masalacism est très heureux de pouvoir de sortir la première production de A Tribe Called Red! These guys are incredible and are probably one of the most exciting collective at the moment on the music level, but also on the video and cultural relevancy and Red Skin Girl is a perfect example! A Tribe Called Red is revolutionizing native music and offers a voice and positive model to the First Nations’s youth. They also are paying attention to other talented artists/activists from the community and it’s the internationally recognized photographer Nadya Kwandibens from the Red Works Studio who generously gave one of her picture for the release’s artwork, taken from her Concrete Indians series.

Ces gars sont incroyables et sont probablement parmi les artistes les plus enthusiasmant du moment tout autant au niveau du son, de l’image que de l’importance culturel et Red Skin Girl en est le parfait example! A Tribe Called Red révolutionne la musique indienne et offre une voix et un modèle positif à la jeunesse autochtone. Ils sont aussi attentifs aux autres artistes activistes de la communauté et c’est la photographe internationalement reconnue Nadya Kwandibens du studio Red Works qui a généreusement offert une photo pour l’artwork du morceau, issue de sa série Concrete Indians sur les arborigènes dans la ville.

Il y a un mois je suis parti à Ottawa pour assister au Electric Pow Wow de A Tribe Called Red, presque la version 2.0 d’un Pow Wow traditionel. J’en ai profité pour leur poser quelques questions pour le nouveau webzine Cluster Mag (shout out to Max and Oliver). On y parle entre autres d’identité amérindienne, de détournement et de sampling.

Après la sortie du EP de Mr. OK Men Mwen l’été dernier, Masalacism commence en force cette nouvelle année avec notre seconde sortie, directement du Botswana, nos amis MaSuper Star et Ruff Riddims.

Masuper Star – Airtime by Masalacism

L’an dernier, quand Kenny et Soops, respectivement chanteur et guitariste de MaSuper Star, sont allés visiter les studios de Ruff Riddims à Palapye, au Botswana, ils ne se doutaient pas qu’ils étaient sur le point d’y faire la session d’enregistrement de leur vie. MaSuper Star, en collaboration avec le producteur Moemedi Ramogapi, s’est immédiatement mis à travailler sur Airtime, leur premier EP.

Soops et Kenny, accompagnés d’une guitare de fortune, ont commencé à chanter devant les stations de bus, dans les centres commerciaux, les bars, partout à Mahalapye, et les gens se rassemblaient pour écouter les chansons de MaSuper Star. Très influencées par la culture et l’actualité botswanaises, ces chansons parlent de la vie quotidienne dans le pays, dans un mélange d’anglais, de setswana (la langue nationale) et de khoi san, une langue que parlent les boshimans du désert du Kalahari.

When vocalist Kenny and guitarist Soops of MaSuper Star visited the Ruff Riddims Studios in Palapye, Botswana last year, the duo had no idea the meeting would lead to the recording session of their lives. Working with producer Moemedi Ramogapi, MaSuper Star would immediately get to work on the premiere EP Airtime.

Despite a homemade guitar made from a Caltex can with a few metal strings, Soops together with Kenny perform and sing at bus stations, malls, bars and everywhere in Mahalapye where people gather to hear the sounds of MaSuper Star. Influenced greatly by the culture and happenings in Botswana, MaSuper Star’s songs relate to daily life in the country, singing in a mix of English, Setswana (Botswana’s national language) and Khoi San, a language spoken by the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.

La chanson-titre « Airtime », par exemple, raconte l’histoire d’une personne qui demande des crédits téléphoniques à son amoureux ou amoureuse pour pouvoir garder le contact avec sa famille et ses amis. L’interruption abrupte de la conversation, suivie du frustrant « Vous n’avez plus de minutes disponibles, veuillez recharger et essayez de nouveau », est une réalité bien connue que Kenny et Soops vivent eux aussi : ils tentent de garder le contact avec leurs proches pendant leurs voyages entre Mahalapye, leur ville natale, et Serowe, la capitale économique.

« Mathichara », qui raconte une grève d’enseignants, est un vibrant plaidoyer à l’intention du gouvernement en faveur de l’augmentation des salaires de ces travailleurs, tandis que « I Say Mama I Say » est un hommage à l’amour maternel. Sur « Katara », à laquelle participe le jeune et talentueux chanteur Skeat (Akwaaba Music), MaSuper Star remercie Dieu pour les talents qu’il leur a donnés.

The lead single “Airtime” is a perfect example. “Airtime” talks about a girlfriend or boyfriend asking their loved one to send phone credits to stay connected on the mobile network with family and friends. The abrupt yet familiar disconnection in the middle of a conversation followed by the frustrating; “You have no available minutes, please recharge and try again” is an interruption Kenny and Soops are also familiar with as they try to stay in touch with loved ones while travelling in search of work between their home town of Mahalapye and the commerce and trade centre, Serowe.

The track “Mathichara” talks about teachers going on strike and is a motivational song to the government for the increase of teachers’ salaries. While, “I Say Mama I Say” gives thanks to the love of mothers. The 4th song, “Katara” features the young
talented singer Skeat (Akwaaba Music) and conveys gratefulness to God for the talents he has given us.

En trois jours passés au studio de Ruff Riddims, MaSuper Star a créé un album achevé aux sons botswanais doux-amers qui, sans aucun doute, interpellera les amateurs partout dans le monde. En plus de ces quatre incroyables chansons, Masalacism  a chargé DJ Mpula du collectif Batida de faire un remix dansant de « Airtime ». Batida, en conservant la mélancolie de la chanson, a vraiment amené une sorte de saudade africaine à cette version club.

Over three days at the Ruff Riddims Studio, MaSuper Star has created an all-embracing album with the bittersweet sounds of Botswana that is sure to resonate with listeners worldwide. On top of these four amazing tracks, Masalacism Records has commissioned a dance oriented remix by DJ Mpula from the Batida Collective. Keeping the inner melancholy of the song, DJ Mpula adds a sort of African Saudade to this club version.
