Zizek Rec lance sa 9e mixtape: El Remolon

Le label argentin Zizek vient de lancer une nouvelle mixtape afin de promouvoir la prochaine tournée nord-américaine des membres du label cet été. Après Douster, Fauna ou King Coya, c’est El Remolon qui propose une mixtape, la seconde en fait, pour la série de mixs que vous pouvez télécharger ici. Comme toute bonne mixtape, il s’agit surtout de production faîtes par lui et de pas mal d’inédits. A noter la présence de 2 canadiens que je connais bien, Boogat et Lido Pimienta, et dont j’ai l’impression on va entendre plus parlé dans les mois à venir!

US banning Dancehall artists, does it means we’ll see them in Canada?

So this morning I read here that US immigration office is not giving out visas or canceling the visas of some dancehall artists like Beenie Man, Mavado, Aidonia, Bounty Killer and probably a few other more. Later today Benoit is telling me that Busy Signal is coming to Montreal with a 50$ presale tickets… Does this means we’ll see more dancehall stars in Canada with increasingly expensive ticket price? Everybody has to make his buck I suppose… And probably not by selling records (ie the Vybz Kartel 8 copies sold fiasco). Talking about free music, Riddim Stream sent out that pretty good track over the quick time riddim last week:

Tom Zé about the politics of Microtonality in Baile Funk

Ok je comprends pas vraiment le portuguais brésilien et quand je suis allé au Brésil j’avais un mal fou à comprendre et à me faire comprendre avec mon espagnol cassé, mais en faisant attention et avec l’expressivité de Tom Zé, c’est pas compliqué de comprendre l’humour de la démonstration magistrale de l’une des figures les plus importantes du mouvement Tropicalia. Le point de Zé c’est de faire une exégèse de Atoladinha, l’un des très gros tube du Funk Carioca d’il y a quelques années, pour montrer à quel point la chanson est subversive (metarefrão / métarefrain) car microtonale et poly-sémiotique. C’est à la fois une moquerie des gens qui dénoncaient le funk et cette chanson comme de la sous-culture (voir cette vidéo satirique) et un exercice de style de relativisme hilarant.
Dans l’introduction, il explique brièvement pourquoi la gamme Do-Ré-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Mi-Ré-Do est une prison construite par les chrétiens catholique au 8e siècle par le pape Grégoire (des chants grégoriens) et qu’avant cela les prêtres se réunissaient dans les catacombes pour chanter des odes microtonales à Dieu jusqu’au 4e siècle. C’est pas le point pour moi de rentrer la-dedans, je pense que vous pouvez extrapoler et voir comment il met les choses à l’envers dans un pied de nez magnifique, mélant libération sexuelle, libération culturelle et féminine de l’oppression chrétienne par le symbole de la musique, tout en mettant ça en parallèle avec le jugement social contemporain des classes bourgeoises envers le funk carioca.

I must admit that I don’t understand Brazilian Portuguese and when I went to Brazil I had lots of difficulties to understand and make myself understand with my broken Spanish, but if you pay attention and with Tom Zé expressiveness, it’s not complicated to understand the humor in this lecture by one of the leading figures of the Tropicalia movement. Zé’s point is to do an interpretation of Atoladinha, one of the very big hit of Funk Carioca from a few years back, to show how the song and the chorus is subversive because micro tonal and polysemiotic. He’s mocking at the same time the people who were dismissing funk and this song as not even culture (see this satirical video) and it’s also a hilarious essay in relativism.
In the introduction, he’s explaining why the Do-Ré-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Mi-Ré-Do scale is a jail built by the catholic christian in the 9th century by the pope Gregory I (from the gregorian chant) and that before that priests were gathering in catacombs to sing microtonals chant to god. I’m not trying to discuss this, but I think you can extrapolate and understand how he turns things upside down in a very clever way, mixing sexual, cultural and women liberation from christian oppression through music, and at the same time subtly applying his critic to the social judgment of upper middle class over funk carioca…
