Un vent chaud du Texas – Krunk Kumbia

Que peut faire un DJ voisin de l’Amérique latine et entraîné par le rouleau compresseur Dirty South et le Krunk? Surement toute une sauce BBQ piquante pour les Chicanos: La Krunk Kumbia! Accélérez les rythmes de la cumbia, prenez un accordéon hypnotique et faites un mash up avec des hits comme Walk it out ou un morceau de Chingo Bling (une vedette de la région) et vous avez la recette! Le style prend essentiellement racine au Texas notemment Dallas.

La cumbia ailleurs

La cumbia se fait de plus en plus entendre ces temps-ci à travers l’Amérique latine. De la forme traditionnelle originaire de la Colombie, le style évolue sans cesse. En Argentine, la “Villera” résonne dans tous les barrios, notamment grâce aux groupes Repiola, Damas Gratis et Pibes Chorros, avec un son “low-fi” très caractéristique.

Au Mexique, comme ailleurs, on retrouve une grande diversité dans le genre. La cumbia sonidera, cousine de la villera, est certainement une des plus populaires. Sinon, la colombiana mexicaine et texane occupe une place tout aussi importante dans la sélection des sonideros (version mexicaine des sounds systems). Celso Pina, Control Machete et Blanquito Man ont su pousser le style en mélangeant tous les genres avec le fameux hit “Sobre el Rio”.

Genders, Bassline, Grime & Dubstep

I’m always reluctant to dichotomized simplification and quite frankly haven’t been to the UK for a long long time, so skepticism is basically what I feel when I read this article: “BASSLINE HOUSE AND THE RETURN OF ‘FEMININE PRESSURE’”. The biologisation of music tastes (metaphoric or not?) is actually also pretty ridiculous. But on the other hand, from what I see here in Montreal, Dubstep is a mostly male movement, just like the DJ world in general. So what’s your call? Bassline House = female VS Grime/Dubstep = Male ?

Edit: Actually, attributing male or female “qualities” to an object is something humans are doing all over the planet all the time. Sex is one of the most classic bipolar classification that human beings are using to put order in the world. And ether or not it’s a metaphoric use here, doesn’t really change anything. The main idea of this article is based on that very common classification and I’m not sure it actually says anything but the conclusions that are embedded in the use of that dichotomy.

Depuis le tube de Mc Buiu et l’invasion des rythmiques Macumbinha, et aussi une session d’écoute live par Mr Sany Pitbull lors de son Baile de Cantagalo un dimanche soir de décembre, je reste à l’affût de tous les morceaux Funk Carioca avec des rythmiques plus ou moins fortement teintées de Samba. J’ai passé la journée d’hier à écouter les nouveautés de ces dernières semaines et il semble que la mode prend de plus d’ampleur à Rio et que le Tamborzao laisse de plus en plus à ces rythmiques; probablement à cause du Carnaval. Voici quelques énormes morceaux qui fonctionnent assurément sur les danseurs:

Since Mc Buiu’s hit and the invasion of Macumbinha rhythms, and also since a live listening session by Mr Sany Pitbull during his Baile de Cantagalo a sunday night of December, I keep my ears open for every Funk Carioca track with a rhythm more or less inspired, or sampling Samba. I spent all day yesterday listening to the new tracks posted during the last few weeks and it seems that the fashion is extending in Rio and that the Tamborzao leave more room for this rhythms; probably because of the Carnival. Above you’ll find some of this huge dancefloor bangers!

NYC’s Bhangra Queen DJ Rekha is coming to Canada

I’m super excited and proud to say that we are bringing DJ Rekha to Canada in a few weeks to perform in both Montreal and Toronto. Rekha has been promoting Bhangra in NYC for more than 10 years now with her monthly night Basement Bhangra. She’s one of the most important figures of the scene in North America as well as an example for many woman with South-Asian roots, or more generally for immigrant women. Last October, she released an album called Basement Bhangra, a milestone in her career celebrating the 10h anniversary of the night. Most of the biggest names in Bhangra participated in the album as well as Wyclef Jean, who is always connected to the new urban sounds of the world. Her Montreal performance will also mark the return of the BAILE MTL night, and in Toronto, she will headline the Pop Montreal showcase at CMW.
