Licensing Fete in POS

Licensing was an amazing party, better than the Fire Fete. Scalpers were hustlin’ hard at the entrance, traffic jam on Wrighston Rd. was huge, the bass was rumbling all around announcing a memorable nite before jumpin’ in a taxi to take our return flight.

Bunji started the show with a brief performance, bit deceiving, maybe is going soft with his recent marriage to Fay-Ann Lyons… Crazy came after with his massive ‘Cold Sweat’ song. It was quite a surprise to see the man on stage, kind of Ron Jeremy of soca with an homeless twist, très très grivois. The crowd get excited when Denise Belfon appears for her new dance called the bicycle wine. She even did the tricycle wine…

The Fete really begin when Shurwayne and Traffik played ‘Open the Gates’ and ‘Alequa’. Before KMC’s turn, Prophet Benjamin, conscious local act, did a solid appearance and roll-on’s were burnin’ all over the place. George Iwer came to accompanied KMC, warming the crowd for Machel. At this time, guys were hunting hard for a wine while HD was making the girls anxious with a long long pause before starting his thing. He didn’t waiste time though to mash up di place with ‘Higher than High’ and ‘One More Time’ back to back but he had problems to keep up the energy as the crowd was leaving the place slowly, maybe it was too late and people were tired. Still, it was good memories to take with us on the plane. Thx to Tamika, Maxine and their friends for the unforgettable night!

French West Indyz Styleeee

Depuis quelques mois déjà on vous parle du son West Indyz qui nous vient sporadiquement de l’underground Dancehall français. J’ai un peu approfondi le sujet durant mon séjour et je vous propose un rapide aperçu de mes découvertes. Ces morceaux viennent de différents cd qui sont généralement assez mal distribués en France. Le tout est chanté en un mélange créole/français des jeunes issus de la Martinique, de la Guadeloupe ou de la Réunion et franchement le son déchire pas mal de prod venu de Jamaïque!

For the last few month, we’ve been talking about the West Indyz sound that we get from the underground dancehall scene in France. I worked on that during my trip and here’s a short overview of my discoveries. This tracks come from different underground cds (apart of Krys) that are usually pretty badly distributed in France. Everything is in mix of Creole and French, a language used by the people of la Martinique, Guadeloupe or La Réunion and seriously that stuff is way better that many prod from Jamaica!

Récémment signé par Universal, Krys semble être la nouvelle figure du dancehall en Françe après l’explosion d’Admiral T.

Tiwony – Ghetto
Autre figure de l’underground dancehall français, vous pouvez checker son profil myspace. Cette chanson date un peu mais la nouvelle production est toute fraîche.

Weafer – Yo K Jalou Pou Ayen (INEDIT!)
Je connais pas grand chose de Weafer. Ce titre est issu de l’excellente compilation Killa Sessions Vol. 3 encore inédite partout et dont j’ai trouvé le bootleg sur soulseek.

MIGHTY KIL LA – Psykopat
Compère de Krys. L’album est pas mal varié. Je n’ai que la vidéo pour l’instant (les cds sont vraiment trop cher en France).

SHAOLIN’ & MAWKEUS – 2 Taff Compress (remix)
Je sais pas qui sont ces gars là, mais j’ai trouvé la vidéo qui va avec.

On fera un spécial West Indies à l’émission dans les semaines à venir avec plus de sons bien chaud. Ce soir encore une rediffusion et on revient la semaine prochaine!

Fire Fete in POS

We had a good time at the Fire Fete last Saturday in Port of Spain. Everybody was dressed in red for a great line up including Maximus Dan, Shurwayne Wincester, Destra and the Fireman himself, Bunji Garlin. Shurwayne performance was solid and tight, and the girls were going wild on the wining. When Bunji arrived, the place got pretty messed up with fights and drunk fatties trying to wine on us… Bunji had his bad boys in front running all around and he took Fireball and Peter Ram on the stage with him to put more fiiiirrreeee in the place. By 4 in the morning, things were still going very mad and we realised will have to go to the gym too if we want to survive to a Trini Carnival… We are in Tobago right now, taking some rest before next Saturday Fete with Machel, Bunji and Allison Hinds

Les Trinis au gym

Comme a Rio, les Trinidadiens sont tres soucieux de leur apparance quand vient le temps de s’exhiber a moitie nu en public. Avec le carnaval qui s’en vient, il y a un rush dans les gyms de Port of Spain. Notre amie Maxine se leve a 4h le matin pour etre sur d’avoir une place pour s’entrainer. Certains veulent perdre jusqu’a 20 livres en un mois!!! Et comme ils sont tres forts sur le poulet frit et les frites et qu’ils ne marchent pas beaucoup (3 voitures pour 2 habitants), beaucoup ont pas mal de kilos en trop… Voici un article pas mal interessant sur le sujet dans le Newsday de TNT. Baboon reçoit de la presse dans La Presse et ailleurs

Philippe Renaud nous donne encore des props dans La Presse du 8 janvier, cette fois pour le Baboon mixtape :
“On vous a déjà dit tout le bien qu’on pense de l’équipe de l’émission Masala (sur CISM) et des soirées Baile MTL, des ambassadeurs du bon goût qui apportent aux masses des rythmes lourds et exotiques. Sur le blogue de Masala, le trio Jay Watts III, Jean- Philippe Émond et Guillaume Decouflet offre aux mélomanes son Baboon Mixtape, 70 minutes de gros son qui vous promène du dubstep au kuduro, en passant par le soca et le crunk. “This column was going to lead with a globe-spanning collection of DJ sets from TravisCastillo.com, but these two sets from Canadian jocks brought out our inner patriot. First came the Baboon mixtape from Montreal’s Baile MTL crew, who must throw the most ridiculous parties in the country judging from how they make baile funk and Black Box make sense together.”

I get wet

It’s Soca time in Trini right now till the Ash Wednesday, the airwaves are saturated with the same ten soca songs you can hear like 5 times a day. Plus everybody playing dem in their cars, bars, hotel, taxis, … you end the day with your head completely mashed up. These are some of the big tunes in TNT right now:

Le Soca est partout a Trinidad en ce moment, juste pour deux mois. Apres le Carnaval on passe au dancehall, ici ils appellent ca du dub, et au Lovers rock, le reggae cheesy. Donc c’est tres intensif, les radios tournent tout le temps les memes tounes, c’est du pur matraquage, en plus des compils pirates qui jouent dans tous les taxis, bars, hotels et chars chromes, on finit la journee avec le cerveau completement lessive. Et le lendemain ca recommence… Voici quelques chansons tres populaires sur l’ile en ce moment:

Machel est la grosse star ici et tout le monde parle de son changement de nom; il s’appelle maintenant Machel Montano HD… il explique dans les journaux que sa demarche est tres spirituel, il veut amener le soca a un autre niveau et blablabla… C’est un peu contreverse pcq les gens se demandent si son band Xtatic avec qui il jour depuis 20 ans va continuer a l’accompagner. Histoire a suivre, en attendant, c’est lui le meilleur “performer” et j’ai bien hate de le voir samedi soir prochain a la Licensing Fete, juste avant de revenir a Montreal
